Although the photograph of the 1950s rewrite man reminds me of my newspaper
career, and there IS a certain resemblance, the man is not me. I’m old,
but not that old. That’s my Pop, George W. Getze, Jr., who was a reporter
for the old Los Angeles Mirror and The Los Angeles Times, and worked
The Mirror’s rewrite desk with noir novelist Jim Thompson. Besides the deadline
and family memories, this photo reminds me that nothing gets written unless
your butt’s in the chair.
