Although the photograph of the 1950s rewrite man reminds me of my newspaper career, and there IS a certain resemblance, the man is not me. I’m old, but not that old. That’s my Pop, George W. Getze, Jr., who was a reporter for the old Los Angeles Mirror and The Los Angeles Times, and worked The Mirror’s rewrite desk with noir novelist Jim Thompson. Besides the deadline and family memories, this photo reminds me that nothing gets written unless your butt’s in the chair.
